Informatie van de uitgever
De verhalen in deze bundel laten je kennis maken met bewoners van Marokko, of het nu jongeren zijn in Fes, pelgrims in Marrakech of filmfiguranten in Ouarzazate.

Met vijf artikelen, is Mariëtte van Beek prominent aanwezig in deze bundel. Zij studeerde Arabisch en specialiseerde zich in de talen en culturen van Marokko. Voor haar promotieonderzoek verbleef ze ruim een jaar in Marokko om mondelinge informatie te verzamelen over de Zeven Heiligen van Marrakech. In haar bijdrage 'Bij elke stap ligt een heilige' beschrijft ze aan de hand van een wandeling in de medina haar zoektocht langs een aantal heiligen. Bij elk heiligdom ontmoet ze pelgrims die de heilige om een gunst vragen of hem bedanken dat hij gehoor heeft gegeven aan hun verzoek.

Kookprogramma
In de Marokkaanse samenleving zijn sinds het aantreden van koning Mohammed VI veranderingen merkbaar. Steeds meer meisjes gaan naar school en vrouwen werken vaker buitenshuis. Daardoor hebben moeders en dochters tegenwoordig minder tijd om te koken. Gelukkig is er voor hen Choumicha, die met haar kookprogramma op tv, het rolmodel is voor kokend Marokko.
Dat een zetje van buitenaf bij kan dragen aan de bescherming van het milieu bewijst reisbegeleidster Wandy Hebly. Ze vertelt over haar initiatief om in samenwerking met lokale mensen de Marokkaanse Sahara te conserveren en dorpjes te beschermen tegen het oprukkende zand.

Geen werk
Een probleem waar ook de koning geen oplossing voor heeft, is de hoge werkeloosheid. Voor veel jongeren in de steden, of ze nu gestudeerd hebben of niet, is hun positie uitzichtloos. Velen proberen het land te verlaten en wie dat niet wil of kan probeert er het beste van te maken, zoals een groep jongeren in Fes. Mariëtte van Beek beschrijft hoe ze door middel van rapmuziek opkomen voor hun rechten en kritiek uiten op de autoriteiten. Ook in Ouazerzate is volgens journaliste Julie van Traa meestal geen werk. Behalve als er een internationale film gedraaid wordt. Dan kunnen duizenden inwoners aan de slag geld als figurant, decorbouwer of simpele sjouwer.

Variatie
Dat Marokko veel afwisseling biedt komt naar voren in enkele reisreportages. Bart Speleers schrijft over zijn bezoek aan de koningssteden Rabat en Meknès, waar traditioneel en modern samenkomen. Alexander Reeuwijk maakt een trektocht door de Hoge Atlas en is geïmponeerd door de fraaie vergezichten. Mariëtte van Beek wil weten waarom Essaouira zo populair is bij kunstenaars, muzikanten en toeristen. Ze ontdekt dat in deze ziltige vesting alle uitersten samenkomen: warm en koud, droog en nat, kleurig en grauw, rijk en arm, Marokkaans en buitenlands.
